Today, February 5, Mexico Constitution Day.

Constitution Day in Mexico is a holiday every 5 February to commemorate the approval of the Mexican constitution by the Mexican constitutional congress in 1917, signalling an end of an era of grave discrimination, unfair labor laws, and gross inequalities for Mexican citizens.

The Mexican Constitution of 1917 is an impressive document as it was the first of the known world to outline social rights. Because of this, it became a model for comparable documents of other nations including the Russian Constitution of 1918 and the Weimar Constitution of 1919.

Famingos in Mexico

Mexico has a huge diversity of wildlife in the world. The pink flamingo is one of the most beautiful birds that made its natural habitat in the northern Yucatan Peninsula. The best places to watch flamingos in Mexico are Celestun, a quiet fishermen village located northwest of the city of Merida. Not only flamingos can be found in the place, also could be seen turtles, spider monkeys, jaguars and tapirs.
The other place is Rio Lagartos, located north of the city of Tizimin in Yucatan. Also, it is a habitat of crocodiles, deers, racoons, jaguars and ocelots.
Finally, Isla Pajaros (bird island) located in Holbox, Quintana Roo. Each year between the months of April and October, around 40,000 flamingos get to the island to feed and nest.
Although the above places mentioned above are the best to watch these animals due to the big flock of birds, sometimes it is possible to watch some small flocks along the whole coast of Yucatan, Campeche and the north of Quintana Roo.

This is a useful table to calculate distances from Cancun City to the main touristic places in the Yucatan Peninsula. Choose the location that you wish to calculate in the vertical column, and then look at your destination in the horizontal row, then follow the vertical and horizontal lines until they reach a point, that is the distance you are looking for.

Mayan Ruins in Cancun City?

Believe it or not, that is true. Many travelers around the world think that the only ruins in the Mexican Caribbean are Tulum and Coba, but in Cancun city you can explore the Ruinas del Rey and El Meco. Although both places are smaller than Tulum, nonetheless, they were very important in the Mayan Culture.

1.- Ruinas del Rey (The King) is located at the hotel zone of Cancun across the breathtaking Playa Delfines beach. In 1909 British travelers Channing Arnold and Frederick Frost visited the site and found an anthropomorphous sculpture that resembled a member of the nobility, like a king and they named the place “The King Ruins”. The archaeologists believe that it was an administrative center of maritime trade.

2.- El Meco, this place is located north of Cancun city in the Mujeres Bay, it had a relevant roll in the Mayan navigation routes along the coast. In 600-800 AD, the place was bonded to Coba as a fishermen village and was an important trade port that controlled the access to the sanctuary of Isla Mujeres.

The sites are small but worth visiting, and you can explore the whole places in a maximum two hours. Both places are easy to reach from your hotel, ask your concierge for directions.

The schedule of both sites is from 8:00 AM to 16:00PM, and the entrance cost is around USD $3.00.
